Depressed na tatay took his 3 kids as hostage sa Tondo Manila.

(Mario had only a knife with him. One of his children managed to escape but not before he stabbed him in the arm),” PO3 Christopher Pascual of the Manila Police District said.

Pascual said Cruz and the children were taken to the Metropolitan Hospital. He said the children were aged 15, 13, and 11.

The dzBB report said a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team rushed inside Cruz’s house after deciding that it would be more dangerous if they allowed the hostage situation to last into the night.

Relatives of Cruz said he likely snapped when his wife working in the United States refused to talk to him on the phone.

Pag ganyan nagwawala na siya, gumagamit (He would not do that. He’s a very kind dad. It was just that he was depressed. His wife would not talk to him maybe because she had much work. When that happens, he snaps and uses drugs),” she said

The city government of Manila, through chief of staff Ric de Guzman, has ordered the closure of a private market which has been operating in violation of city regulations.

Tasked by De Guzman to implement the order were department of public services chief, Ret. Col. Carlos Baltazar, market chief Efleda Castro and city administrator Jesus Mari Marzan, who served notice to the operators of the Asuncion Market in Divisoria to cease operations until further notice.

Baltazar said the city government could not take over the said market owing to a pending court case between its owner and Councilor Dennis Alcoreza who has been operating it.

It was learned that Alcoreza and the owner of the market are in a tug-of-war over its ownership.

According to Baltazar, the operation of the market under Alcoreza is illegal, since it is not backed by the necessary franchise and has not been paying the city its dues.

Marzan, meanwhile, said that the some 200 stall holders peddling their wares in the said market have been paying Alcoreza fees ranging from P100 to P200 a day.
